E-Design · Living RoomA family living room designed around a sofa they loved, a fireplace they wouldn’t give up, and a tasteful touch of pink.
The full palette: navy, honey oak, and brushed brass, tied together by a soft abstract rug in blush, navy, and gray. Walls in Benjamin Moore Pale Oak keep everything warm and calm. (Fireplace shown is a close stand-in for the family's existing one.)
The TV moves to the side wall on a long console, directly across from the sofa, so the fireplace stays clear and keeps its place as the room's anchor. A swivel accent chair turns toward either one, the fire for conversation or the screen for movie night, and a generous 10' x 14' rug pulls the whole seating group together.
The Brief
This family came to me with a sofa they loved and a question they couldn’t answer: where should the eye land? The fireplace was the room’s natural anchor, and they didn’t want to give it up to a television mounted overhead. They wanted a space that felt elevated but lived-in, beautiful enough to gather in and comfortable enough for real family life. And she had one personal wish: pink, done tastefully.
The Design
The rug carries the story. Its abstract wash of blush, navy, and soft gray delivers her pink in a grounded, sophisticated way, and its navy tones connect it to the swivel chair, velvet pillows, and lamp base around it. Rose crewel pillows and mauve florals repeat the pink in small doses, so it reads as a thread running through the room, not a theme. The result feels balanced and right for everyone who lives there.
The biggest question was the television. Instead of mounting it over the fireplace, I moved it to the side wall, across from the sofa, and chose a Canvas TV that displays art when it’s off. The fireplace stays the heart of the room, and the screen becomes a framed painting most of the day. A swivel chair lets one seat serve both.
The sputnik fixture adds personality overhead and real light where the family gathers, and brass finishes, honey oak, and seagrass warm the space. Lidded baskets give the family’s things somewhere to go. The result is approachable and stylish, much like the family who lives there.
“Cherrie is a delight to work with. She listened to our needs and came through with more than we could have imagined. Can’t wait to do the next room!” — Ashley
